Cowl lacing is always a hot topic among hot rodders and restoration gurus. It seems that everyone has their own cowl lacing tricks to prevent the ends from fraying. Here’s how I do it.

Step One: Get a can of Grip Dip. This product is intended for dipping your tools to create no-slip grips. Over the years I’ve discovered that this is a perfect way to prevent cowl lacing frays. It is flexible, durable and weathers well. You should be able to find this at your local hardware store.

Step Two: After measuring the lacing and performing a ‘dry run’ preinstall, cut the lacing with a very sharp knife or razor blade.

Step Three: Insert the end of the lacing into the Grip Dip to about 1/8 inch. Hold the lacing in the Grip Dip for a few seconds. This allows it to absorb into the end of the cowl lacing.

Step Four: Slowly remove lacing from the Grip Dip. Allow excess to drip off lacing end.

Step Five: Turn lacing right side up and allow to dry thoroughly (at least 30 minutes dry time).

Step Six: Place lacing on cowl to install.
